Why do people move internationally?
The reasons vary widely: a new job, living closer to family, discovering a different culture or simply starting a new adventure. Students regularly move between countries. The first step: administration and paperwork
Once you know where you are moving to, sort out the paperwork as soon as possible. Find out about the immigration laws and rules of your destination country. Make an inventory of what you are taking with you, what you are selling or giving away, and what you may keep in storage. Cancel subscriptions, notify your bank and pass on your change of address to all relevant authorities. Do not forget the school either if you have children.
Practical preparation before and after the move
Make sure you are ready for your arrival in your new country as well. Arrange a local phone number, an internet connection and other utilities in good time. The earlier you organise this, the smoother the transition will be. Look for a moving company with proven international experience and a good reputation. Ask about accreditations and references.
Prepare for surprises
Be realistic: international moves are complex and require extensive preparation. Ask family and friends to help you and be prepared for the unexpected. Some things are harder to sort out than expected, but nothing is impossible. Everything falls into place if you give it enough attention and time.
