Are you handling the packing yourself? Then make sure your belongings are packed in advance. Only the things you need immediately after the move should be packed at the very last moment.
1. Label your boxes properly
Write the name of the room each box should go to on every box. Use cushions or packing paper in boxes with fragile items to prevent damage. This way unloading goes much faster and you limit any possible damage.
2. Know the consequences if you pack yourself
If you pack yourself, you are not insured for any damage during the move. If you leave the packing to the moving company, your goods are insured. If you help the moving company with the packing, ask what the terms of the insurance are.
3. Arrange a parking space for the removal van
Is parking difficult in front of your house? Arrange a free spot and good access for the removal van in advance. You may need to apply for a parking permit. In some cases your moving company can also arrange this for you.
4. Defrost your fridge and freezer in advance
Do not forget to defrost your fridge and freezer a few days before the move. That way you will not be bothered by any leftover water on moving day itself.
5. Arrange care for children and pets
If you have young children, find a babysitter. It is also smart to arrange temporary care for your pets. That way they are safe and do not get frightened by all the commotion.
6. Make sure your mobile phone is charged
Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged on moving day. The moving team needs to be able to reach you if there are any questions.
7. Keep screws and bolts together with dismantled furniture
Are you dismantling your furniture yourself? Keep all screws and nuts in a separate bag and tape that bag to the dismantled piece of furniture. That way you find everything again when reassembling.
8. Gather all the keys
Collect all the keys to your house. Have you ever lent spare keys to a neighbour, friend or family member? Ask for them back now.
9. Notify the relevant organisations
Do not forget to notify banks, the council, your cable company and other organisations about your move. Also cancel the contracts with utility companies such as electricity, gas and water.
10. Do a final check before you leave
Once everything seems to have been moved, do one more round through the entire home. Check cupboards, cellars, attics and outdoor storage. It is your responsibility to make sure nothing is left behind.
11. Inform the moving company about the layout of your new home
Tell your moving company how your new home is laid out, so that furniture can be placed in the right room straight away. Boxes with coloured stickers per room make it clear for everyone.
12. Check the basics on arrival
On arrival, check the gas and electricity meters. Make sure your telephone, alarm system, electricity and gas supply and central heating are working properly.
13. Check the condition of the new home
Did the previous owner leave the home as agreed? Take action immediately if that is not the case. An inventory of the condition on arrival can prevent problems later.
14. Replace the locks
It is not a bad idea to replace the locks of your new home. You never know who the previous owners gave spare keys to. A small investment for a lot of peace of mind.
